Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
OK CWebers, here's your chance to act as a national selector and pick your national team without prejudice.

The only rules are no ageism, succession strategy, behaviour standards, loyalty, short term availability (e.g. Simon Jones can play for the A side so why not England) or willingness to participate need to be taken into account

You can pick it to win this game, the next, with the future in mind or for pure entertainment

I'll start with Australia for the first test vs NZ

1. Katich - a given
2. Hayden - ditto
3. Ponting - ditto
4. Hussey - ditto
5. Watson- technically the best after Huss but needs time, can bowl
6. Symonds - a winner and a prick
7. Haddin - talented and cant think of anyone else
8. Krezja - 12 wickets
9. Clark - best Oz bowler but treated disgracefully so should be fresh
10.Bollinger - more passport stamps than games, give him a go
11. Tait - "you, grow up and bowl 12 overs @ 150 ks in 3 spells"
12. A-Rod - if Eng can pick a pro fielder then so can we
Coach. Warnie - see Symonds but with a cricket brain
Captain. Kat-Man - school of hard knocks with a brain
V.C. Symonds - grow up and take some responsibility

n.b. if this was done a week ago, I'd have begged McGrath to replace Tait

Whatever it takes!!!
Indian ODI team against England:

Gambhir
Sehwag
Rohit Sharma
Suresh Raina
Badrinath
Dhoni
Yousuf Pathan
Piyush Chawla
Irfan Pathan
Praveen Kumar
Munaf Patel

Reserves:

Sreesanth
RP Singh
Virat Kohli

Rest for Zaheer, Ishant, Harbhajan, Sachin... Give time off for Yuvraj to go and get his knee sorted.. May miss 1 year of cricket but he will be back in time to build up for the World Cup.. And we won't have to carry his fielding.. Hope he will be back as the good fielder he was. Put someone like Tiwary and Vijay and perhaps Dhawan or even Uthappa amongst the reserves among batsmen...

And of course, bring back Powar and Murali Kartik in the mix. :)

England Test Side
Trescothick - willingness to participate not being an issue meant he was the first name on the sheet
Cook - better than Strauss
Pietersen* - I want my best batsman at 3
Vaughan - give him a crack at scoring some runs without the armband
Collingwood - because, you know
Shah - let's give him a shot, even though he probs deserves to bat higher, would consider swapping him with Colly actually
Flintoff - let him loose at 7
Read+ - mainly to piss off BCCI itbt, couldn't think of another keeper aside from the incumbent(s) who ain't done a lot
Sidebottom - love him
S. Jones - love him
Anderson - becoming one of the better pacers in the world

KP can take care of any spin

It may change tomorrow but as of right now

1. Strauss
2. Cook
3. KP
4. Vaughan
5. Patel
6. Flintoff
7. Collingwood
8. Prior
9. Harmison
10. Sidebottom
11. Anderson

Vaughan over Shah and Bopara based on Im not willing to throw away 6000 Test runs and 18 tons on the gamble that an unproven player may be marginally better.

Patel over Bell and Panesar as Panesar is often a passenger in games and Bell has not done enough to hold his place.

Trescothick not selected as Cook and Strauss are pretty experienced players.

Collingwood bats at 7 as I think it is a key position and he suits the role I would give him

4 pronged attack of GBH, Anderson, Sidebottom and Flintoff to carry the burden with Collingwood, Patel and KP to help out when required.

Why Prior? If I thought someone else deserved it then Id give it them. As it stands I think he deserves a 2nd chance and he would be a World class number 8.

First Class Debutant
England ODI Side for subcontinent

1. Trescothick - As above, would be in side if he was fit to be
2. Bell - IMO, last chance saloon as a ODI batsmen, needs to start performing but deserves the chance
3. Shah - Deserves a chance, plus is one of the better players of spin in the country
4. Pietersen - Best Cricketer in England
5. Collingwood - Solid performer with the bat 'a good finisher'
6. Flintoff - Obvious really
7. Foster - Best wicketkeeper batsmen in England, why he hasn't had a chance in 5 years is beyond me
8. Swann - Best front-line spin bowler who can also provide with the bat
9. Broad - Bowls well in combination with Anderson and can bat, will continue to improve
10. Harmison - On his day, capable of destroying the best batting line-ups in the world
11. Anderson - Bowled more good spells in ODI's than anyone else over last few years

Assuming all who are available are fit:

Katich
Hayden
Ponting
Watson
Hussey
Symonds
Haddin
Lee
Krezja
Clark
Bollinger
12: Clarke/ Jaques

Of all the batsmen, Clarke would be closest to the chop IMO.

Krezja's there because he took 12 in his last match, not because he's necessarily the long term answer - we just don't know yet, and offies have a dire record in Australia generally. Johnson's stamina is superb - really, really great. But to me he's limited ATM and I'd prefer to see Bollinger given a go, and if not him then Siddle. The left arm factor gives Doug the nod in my team.
I've put Watson at 4 ahead of Hussey in my middle order in a negative move, because frankly the thought of Watto and Symonds batting next to each other at this point in their respective careers scares me. If one of them is to go, then Jaques opens and Katich drops to 5 with Hussey at 4.
