Razzak banned

Bangladesh spinner Abdur Razzak has been banned from bowling due to an illegal action, a Bangladesh Cricket Board official said on Monday.
The ban will be effective until he corrects his action, the official said.

He was assessed by Marc Portusa, a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) panel of human movement specialists at the Australian Institute of Sports (AIS) on Nov. 17 and missed the recent test series in South Africa.

The left-arm spinner's bowling action was reported as suspect during the two-test series against New Zealand in October.

Umpires Daryl Harper and Asoka de Silva reported they had concerns over his action when bowling faster deliveries.

I thought he'd been examined, found to be illegal, undergone remedial action, and been cleared?

Guess he's the next Shabbir Ahmed - try as he might, that kink keeps coming back.

The analysis showed that the straightening was between 22 and 28 degrees (average 25 degrees) and, for his quicker ball, between 22 and 28 degrees also (average 24 degrees). This is pitiful, given that the maximum permissible is 15%. How has anyone (his coaches, his management, the ICC) allowed him to play for so long without this being addressed?

No idea. Saw him during the SA series and couldn't believe my eyes: it is a ridiculous action - coaches need to start calling their own players out.

Yes and at an early age - this poor chap now has to rebuild his own action drastically, under an unforgiving spotlight, at far too late a stage in his career

Bloody hell. That's almost Perera-Lord's-2002-esque.

IIRR he was measured at (to an error of 5deg) 35deg. THAT was blatant.

Throwing is a huge problem in Bangladesh - a list comes out at some point during every season of all the banned bowlers. So if they let Razzak bowl, those banned must have effectively been baseball pitchers (although I suppose the fact that Razzak was one of the best bowlers in the country made a difference). Nadif Chowdhury, who is probably on the fringes of the one-day set-up, was a promising left-arm spinner a couple of years back; he's just a batsman these days.

A blow for Bangladesh, but Shakib is improving by the day. Good to see the system working as well - there's no point having the rules, then not applying them.

Christ, Perera was the worst chucker I've ever seen. Meckiff and Lindwall were before my time

The funny thing about Perera was that I'd seen him before and had never seen any problem. And he's bowled loads since (though he isn't very good) and no-one else ever seems to have cited (no, not sighted) him.

But at Lord's in 2002 - well, as you say, was as blatant as they come. A rare occasion where a few banal side-on angles told you the full story with no need for 3D analysis.

Funny you should say that, I bowl 50mph legcutters, and yet there were one or two occasions this season when I was sure I was throwing it. And I reckon my action is usually very clean.
