The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

This has nothing to do with minnows bashing. Both can be true. He's 51@89 against top 8, which is still very good. Anyway, this whole conversation is based on the assumption that you were picking an ODI team. If I had known you were picking a WC team, I wouldn't be objecting to his inclusion.

Averaging 76 @ 103 in WCs is a fair bit of minnow bashing. I'm not saying he wasn't good against quality opposition as well.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

If you are selecting for WCs rather than ODIs, then Clarke is probably fair game. It's a really good record even if does involve a lot of minnow bashing. Not as good as the numbers make it seem in relation to Kallis as scoring changed a lot by era. But Kallis was pretty poor in WCs anyway.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Clarke is Australia's Kallis. Excellent in a weaker team, but scores too slowly for an ATG one.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Not sure about that. He seems to have taken on this kind of workload for 3 series. Averages of 22 30 and 32. No idea what role bowling more played in this though. Workload questions aside, there are quality questions at the level of 4 ATGs without a decent 5th. He was probably only the 3rd best...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I don't like the idea of playing Miller as a 4th bowler. It might be the strongest combo (not sure). But it's less clear to me that this team is stronger than the other top ATG sides when the bowling gets weakened.

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

These guys haven't made the list. You are probably right about the likelihood of them beating possibly better players. People default to players they know better. The criteria for selection did get refined a bit over the Barry question to test performances only after the bowling was done. In...

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

Plenty of guys with averages like these from other eras that aren't cracking the list. Some with a lot more tests and in stronger bowling eras. Would you pick any of these guys to knock Mitchell out of 50th? No way for me. His career spanned 20 years, lost most of his peak to WWII, played...

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

You are mostly just talking about 2 teams here. 6 played, and 4 were somewhere from weak to rubbish. Good spinners, but it's only a few guys across a long period of time. Good era for batting, but that's adding to my point. It's enough to have a full career, but it really requires some luck in...

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

Exclusively between wars means (for almost everyone) longevity problems. It's a pretty soft era. And you aren't looking at the best from the era, who also played either side of a war.

Why is it viewed as more important

A bit less than this on the average delta if you want to calculate it this way. A bat doesn't get dismissed 4 times every game. I think it's still reasonably valuable, and will swing the odd game. But I don't think it's likely to be as important as the other secondary disciplines. Having more...

Why is it viewed as more important

What's your take on that 16/17 run calculation kyear? If it's correct I think extra batting/bowling is definitely more useful in a typical game

Is James Anderson an ATG test bowler?

Pollocks record got spanked by playing through nasty injuries, partly on account of his batting. Anderson sits out with a niggle, or when conditions don't suit. This is not an indictment of Anderson. It's just good bowler management, but it does explain the similarity in their numbers when...

Why is it viewed as more important

Essentially the same number of runs, but a very different conclusion on the value of the runs. I think 16/17 runs may be overestimating the runs saved- a team with a great slip is usually going to have a good one too. Still handy though- maybe someone like Mark Waugh is handier than everyone...
