    **Official** English Football Season 2023/24

Leighton James' passing shouldn't go without comment, and @nick-o may have his own memories of Leighton's playing days. Vale.

Granted Madrid were out-possessed, but I think that ouplayed is overstating things. City created so little with all of their possession in the second half that it was actually a suprise when they scored. And Madrid could have scored more than one in the first half anyway.

Impressive from Aldridge. Rather less so from Burns, who couldn't get anything on the first three deliveries that he faced, then holed out. 5 down now. Somerset could win this, you know. Nope, they're shaking hands.

Ah, you jinxed him mate. In answer to your question, purely as a batsman I think he needs to go on with it rather more often than he currently manages. Not so much this innings of course, due to the situation, but generally. As a keeper/batsman, sometimes people forget that he doesn't...

It won't be easy with all 9 fielders apart from the keeper on the boundary. Anyway, credit Lewis Gregory for playing so well to put his side in this position. Interesting to see the different approaches of the two bowlers; Pretorius backing himself to bowl normally, whereas Overton is bowling...

Longer than that mate. He played for England in the 1981/82 tour of India and Sri Lanka, and would surely have played even longer if he hadn't gone to South Africa a month or two after that series finished. I think his outstanding performances on drying pitches, and of course he was lethal in...

Yesterday's results reminded me of Graeme Souness's comment after Liverpool won their 3rd consecutive league title in 1984 without really hitting the heights of previous seasons. 'By our standards, we didn't deserve to win the league this year, but by everyone else's standards, we did.'

If Somerset are bowled out today for around 200, then we have the exciting possibility of Sibley and Burns batting on all four days of the match. Elsewhere, Essex are doing their usual thing even without Sam Cook. Such an effective team.

Interesting snippet from the Surrey/Somerset live stream. Apparently Dan Lawrence is the only Daniel to have played test cricket for England.

Whilst I wouldn't want to write off Ahmed after one poor performance, especially in April, he wasn't great in India either. From memory, he was comfortably out-performed by Hartley and Bashir.

Worth mentioning Shaun Udal, who was diagnosed with Parkinsons five years ago. He's only 55 now. Maybe everyone apart from me already knew, but maybe not.

It was even worse than that as they had reached 196 for 1. Handy spell from Atkinson, judging by the scorecard.

I'm sure there's a very old sketch from Morecambe and Wise or the Two Ronnies where ascoreboard shows that a batsman is compiling a huge innings, but we don't see until he (probably Morecambe or Barker) walks off at the end of the day that his bat is about a metre wide.
