Very pleased with that result, after a couple of draws and a loss it was very important to get a win. Fantastic stuff from Fitzsimmons and of course Thomas. From what I can tell it was another good team bowling effort and our top order fired. All things we were looking at improving this season.

Red were lifted by the spectacular of the individual, glossing over large holes in a team still struggling to recover. Both batting efforts were saved by the big score - one batsman providing more than half the runs - while another Amir ten-for confirmed him as the bowling find of the season. For Cricket Web Blue, Trav Demeza threatened to provide a similar match-turning spell on the third day, but the captain's effort eventually proved fruitless.
Winning the toss and batting was a key difference today. Despite crashing to 51 for three thanks to a hostile spell from Demeza, Red had a settled Dauth, who immediately began attacking the bowlers. Maina was taken out of the attack after being thumped for six in the 21st over; a second Demeza spell before lunch provided little difference, and Red went to eat contented with a tally of 104 for three.
Sriram effectuated a fine caught and bowled to get rid of Kearsley in the first over after the interval, and Blue continued to pile on pressure, but were held back by an aggressive Dauth. Having completed his fifty with a fortutious edge over third man, he took 77 minutes to complete the 100, off just 104 balls. However, he had only just begun. Demeza's quick bowling simply posed no threat to the flamboyant Red, as he smashed three sixes and four fours to race from 100 to 150 in twenty minutes. Shortly after tea, he smashed Popat to Sriram for 175, but the damage had been done; Red ended with 335 all out with Demeza taking out the tail.
The openers started well for Blue, with Stephen Young being granted a life on 11, but Amir kept up the happy habit of having men caught in the deep. Both Peter Young and Cribb suffered this fate, though Young kept striking to ensure some parity at 74 for two at stumps on the first day.
Camps and Young kept the aggression going in the morning, as Raghav and Amir were sent into battle without much success. 64 runs came in the first nine overs, and in despair, Red turned to their spinner on a second-day wicket. Bennett was mainly expected to provide containment, but after a first over with a solitary single, Camps smashed out to Kearsley for the third wicket. With Young tied down and eventually yorked for 88, coupled with a run out and a toppie to take care of Crampton, Blue were struggling at 199 for six - but crashed 30 runs in the four overs before lunch to keep in the contest.
Amir bowled with renewed vigour after being tossed the ball in the second over after lunch, and but for Kearsley's butterfingers at point, he should have had a hattrick. Instead, he had to be content with two wickets in three balls - Popat lbw after a cameo 22, while Sriram managed a second ball duck before being caught at first slip. With Bowen caught in a similar fashion four overs later, the Reds expected their bowlers to roar through Maina and Demeza.
However, helped by four dropped catches, the pair added 61 in a gruelling two hours for the home fans. Demeza's 21 was mostly creditable, save for a few wild strokes, while Maina also showed batting potential in an unbeaten 37. Eventually, it was Zac Ritchie who broke the spell, having Demeza caught behind, but the chance of a big lead had been squandered.
After Singh was lbw to Sriram, Mørk and Gray fought off the bowling excellently, and batted out the evening with confidence. The Red captain was confident he had turned a corner, as he boasted in the post-play press conference, and thus proceeded to edge Popat in the third over of the morning. With Dauth caught for a golden duck, Popat picked up a brace, as the spinners continued their surprising performance on the Oval wicket - before Demeza's first over of the morning. It was the stuff of Blue legend. The first ball grazed the pad and Crampton's head, going down for four legbyes. The second beat Kearsley altogether. The third found the bottom edge, Demeza diving forward and left to take a splendid catch. The fourth was a no-ball, the fifth swiftly driven for two through midwicket, and the sixth and seventh yorkers to have Ritchie caught at mid on and Nayak bowled. Three wickets to redeem the last evening's new ball performance, and Demeza was back on song.
Gray was still there, however, having compiled 58, and the seventh-wicket pairing stood firm to add 59 faultless runs before lunch. Yet, with a spitting wicket and quality bowling, the Reds knew it couldn't last. Gray was again out in the nineties immediately after resuming, Demeza executing him with another toe-crusher, and the Blues whittled the last men out for 32 - Kennett once again unbeaten.
Chasing 221 would always be touch and go, but it was a meagre target with which to entrust Amir with taking wickets. Yet so he did. Kennett and Bennett held catches off both Youngs to see Blue at 30 for two at tea, a considerably brighter proposition, and with Camps and Cribb out shortly after, Amir could have been said to have done his job. But for inept wicketkeeping, however, it could have been much better. Amir probed a fine line outside off stump, but Mørk managed to drop Bowen three times - all of them regulation - before also flooring Wilson. Eventually, Amir had to enlist the help of the umpire, who gave Wilson lbw out of pity - five down, all from Amir, but at the cost of 66 runs from him and 108 for the team.
With Bennett at one end, and the other seamers tired, Mørk decided to play the joker. Zac Ritchie was enlisted to bowl, and with his first ball, Crampton attempted to say thank you by hoiking him out of the stadium. Missing by six inches, Mørk got an opportunity to earn a reprieve, and did so by holding the catch and giving Ritchie a wicket first ball. More was to come, as Popat was inexplicably given lbw in the next over, before Sriram was caught by Amir. Now Blue needed 77 for the last two wickets - but the Blues remembered their first innings heroics.
So did Red, and immediately sought to stop it by providing pace. Maina got two lives off Kennett, and with Bowen smashing runs off every stroke - including a six off Bennett - the runs required fell quickly, but Raghav and Amir held their catches at the end to give Kennett two wickets and the Reds a hard-earned victory. Rob Bowen, furious with his team-mates, could only despair despite his unbeaten 69.
