What a crap performance from myself. Good effort from most of the Colts' batsmen, but that was a dire track, tough on the bowlers.

One-day - 26 September - First innings report

Note that this match was concurrent with the Test match, and as such, I replaced Cloete, Demeza and Peter Young in the selected elevens.

First innings

Cricket Web Red vs Cricket Web Blue
at CW Oval

On an underprepared wicket, Kingsley Clapham put in a stunning bowling effort to keep the excitement alive in the league, reducing Blue to 39 for six after a quadruple haul. Resistance from the lower order has meant that Blue still posted a competitive total, however, and the chase of 169 will not be easy.

A low crowd, dejected by dismal performances from the hosts in recent one-day games, expected little, but a returning Clapham suddenly found swing in his fourth over, separating the opening pairing. From there, Red worked the new ball to stunning effect, and the middle order effort was nothing but embarrassing.

However, Red's effort to apply the pressure were equally poor. After Muhammad Amir had dismissed the last recognised batsman, Adam Collins turned up with a 61-ball knock on a pitch that didn't flatten noticeably, falling nine short of a career best score in the format. Andy Maina did register a career best, doubling his average, as he remained not out while Bennett bowled Sriram to finally end the innings.

Cricket Web Blue 168 all out (42.4)
Collins 38; Clapham 4/49, Amir 2/25

Masters XI vs Cricket Web Colts
at Casston Reserve

After batting first, a reserved rebuilding effort saved the Colts from potential embarrassment after the loss of early wickets at Casston. Dylan Cole continued in a splendid vein of batting form, refusing to get out during a stolid 74, while the Masters simply failed to pile on any pressure.

The match was played on a difficult wicket, as showed by the first grubber from Shane Bond to Arunava Das, who feebly fended behind to be out to an athletic catch. The openers struggled, as Tyron Henderson grabbed two wickets, and the Colts crashed to 40 for three after eleven overs.

Yngve Fjermestad took the leading role in the partnership that developed, and thus perished early, smashing out to Thomas Odoyo, but the trend had been set; Cole tying down one end while his batting partner was responsible for keeping the run rate up. This worked well enough for Colts, though a few dropped catches was required to help them to 199 for five with an over to spare; Nick Hancock then smashed eighteen to give the Colts a slightly more competitive total.

Cricket Web Colts 217 for five (50)
Cole 74*, Hancock 37*; Henderson 2/51

Cricket Web Green vs Cricket Web Black
at CWBCC Stadium

Cricket Web Green were mauled after choosing to bowl in their own backyard, with James Stedman notching up another in the seemingly endless range of centuries as Black amassed 316 for three. Xavier Rose was occasionally threatening, but overall, Black dominated.

Strangely, Black didn't exploit the field restrictions to great extent, with Ash Chaulk taking 36 balls to make it past 20. The run rate was a sedate 4.7 after 15 overs, but Chaulk, realising they had been inserted and pressure was on to make Green uncomfortable, smacked sixteen in three glorious shots off Mitchell. Black rarely looked back, though Chaulk continued in his succumbed fashion and was out shortly afterwards; Daniel Smith played a fine foil to a rampant Stedman, who recorded nineteen boundaries in an exceptional knock. Rose took two wickets in his death spell, but could not prevent a hefty total.

Stedman 155, Smith D 71; Rose 2/50 (9)

Jeez, will be doing well to get that.

In other news, haha at Blue, captain's outburst after the last game creating a 1996 Keegan-esque capitulation.

Second Innings - 26 September

Cricket Web Red vs Cricket Web Blue
at CW Oval

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

As some pessimists expected, the wicket was too much for an embarrassingly poor Red to handle, as they collapsed for a round century - that's the team tally - to allow Blue to have the last laugh and qualify for the one-day final. With Rob Dauth not listed in the eleven, Red failed to find a rock to build the innings around, and crumbled feebly despite various tactics to overcome the low total.

Electric fielding from Blue helped, admittedly, as did a pair of accurate opening spells from Maina and Collins. Only one wicket actually fell, but some pressure was built, as Red always feared a collapse similar to the one Blue had suffered. And what one fears often comes to pass; the middle order was torture for the home fans, as Matt Luff's comical run out summed up how misfit this Red one-day XI was compiled. When Martin West threatened to rebuild with Martin West, Sudeep Popat struck twice to end the match and complete an excellent bowling effort, where Liam Camps had taken three vital wickets earlier.

Cricket Web Blue 168 all out (42.4)
Collins 38; Clapham 4/49, Amir 2/25

Cricket Web Red 100 all out (38.4)
Luff 26; Popat 3/7 (3.4), Camps 3/27 (8)

Cricket Web Blue won by 68 runs
Man of the Match: A. A. A. Collins (Blue)

Masters XI vs Cricket Web Colts
at Casston Reserve

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

A fantastic effort from Kyle Wright stopped the Masters' chase in its tracks, reducing Brian Lara to a one-end stickler as his batting order was taken away from him. Celebrations were muted, however, due to recent events in Nixonstown.

The match was really decided after 44 balls, as is often the case in one-day cricket when one of the teams has an on-song bowler. By then Wright stood with three for six, having snared Farhat, Kemp and Das, and the Masters were disrobed at 12 for three. A rearguard effort from Lara and Benkenstein - who was dropped off Wright in the bowler's seventh over - briefly threatened to rejuvenate the Masters' effort, but Hutchinson quelled any such hopes with a fine mid-innings spell, leaving Lara and Benkenstein as lone soldiers against the charge of the Colts. Wright eventually picked up Lara to complete the four haul; it should have been five, ensuring a bonus point win, but Ryan Dunn floored Shane Bond and allowed Tyron Henderson to smash a boundary.

Cricket Web Colts 217 for five
Cole 74*, Hancock 37*; Henderson 2/51

Masters XI 180 for nine (50)
Lara 69, Benkenstein 49; Wright 4/25, Hutchinson 3/30, Dunn 2/36

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

A dejected Green side collapsed feebly to Blake Donald, the third in the ranks of spectacular individual bowling efforts today. Donald, admittedly, had more degree of freedom in his play, but the bowling was just as good as exhibited on other grounds around the country.

Green showed the first signs of being unable to cope when Nick Scott edged Donald to a waiting Matt Smith at cover; just three overs had been played, and already the pressure of a high required rate appeared to have been applied. Four overs later, Donald produced a peach to dismiss Ben Read clean bowled - when his next ball was edged by Corrin, even the most faithful of Green fans realised - especially with news coming in from Nixonstown about Red's abject surrender - that Green were not going to a final this year.

Donald picked up a fourth wicket, Dinnen bowled, and from 49 for four the rest was a formality. Rob Malone kept the hope alive briefly, having survived Donald's onslaught, but was caught behind attempting to reverse sweep Mohanan's medium pace, and the match ended with Jack McNamara run out with the required run rate near 25.

Cricket Web Black 316 for three (50)
Stedman 155, Smith D 71; Rose 2/50 (9)

Cricket Web Green 190 all out (44.4)
Malone 79; Donald 4/20 (8), Gelman 2/35 (9), Smith M 2/37 (7.4)

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Slim hopes with Blue bundled out. Hopefully we can get some early wickets from Spinks and Kyle...

Edit: haha, Mork posted just as I did.

Haha @ Red. :( Oh well, after last seasons abysmal OD effort I'm glad the way we've gone this season. Now the challenge will be to continue with that next year and actually not choke.

Gun bowling from Kyle there, Hutchinson backing up well too. Dunn finishing things off nicely in his recall.

Pretty good effort to come third when last year we could barely score a run or take a wicket in OD, something to build upon.
