I'm at the second day at OT myself. Seems as there is a fair chance of no Fred, harmison is off form etc, I hope we're batting, so I can watch Pietersen

Preferred teams for the 1st test:

ENGLAND:

Trescothick *
Strauss
Cook
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Jones - even though i obviously prefer Read
Plunkett
Hoggard
Harmison
Panesar

If Flintoff can't play at all i'd pick a 4th seamer in Lewis ahead of Panesar & play Bell as the extra batsman.

PAKISTAN:

Shoaib Malik
Salmab Butt
Younis Khan
Mohammad Yousuf
Inzamam UL-Haq
Shaid Afridi/Abdur Razzaq
Kamran Akmal
Mohammad Sami
Umar Gul
Mohammad Asif
Danish Kaneria

Terribly weak lower order there, none of the last four can affectively hold a bat let alone use it.

Less than 2 weeks to go, and I'm trying to work out how England will lineup sans Fred and given the "form" of our young quicks. I certainly can't imagine another allrounder at 6, so we're probably looking at 6-1-4.

Maybe:
Tres, Strauss, Cook, KP, Bell, Collingwood, Jones, Plunkett, Hoggard, Harmison & Panesar.
That side is even worse than the one that ended up drawing the series 1-1 with Sl given that it lacks Flintoff. I dont see any reason why Butcher should not be given a go in the side when we clearly need some experience in the middle order. Bell hasnt exactly been setting the world alight in domestic cricket either.

Pakistan need a specialist opener, and shoaib malik is not the answer. nor is his technique good enough considering that hes always playing away from his body. and Mohammad Sami is for all uses and purposes rubbish,

Thats tre about Malik but Woolmer seems determined to make an opner out of him & so far Malik really hasn't disappointed. Sami yea he is trash but with Shoaib & Naved & he may will play at the start.

How in the world anyone other than Graveney can have Plunkett in their preferred team i'll never know.
Plunks has been garbage in the ODI vs SRI thus far but he impressed in the test series vs SRI form the second innnings at lord's onwards so i am willing to give him another chance for at least the 1st test.

I agree Butcher should be given another shot but he himself needs to put runs on the board for Surrey so that the selectors can pick him.

well all good, all he needs to do is keep it up & if the middle-order doesn't do well vs Pakistan the selectors will have to look at him.
