Yeah, the WI 3rd Test team vs Australia in 1980 was great (that's the team I was looking for but couldn't find it so I settled on the 1984 WI team)

btw, I put them in the right batting order as Slifers team with Murray at # 11 looked wierd to me (overly fussy I know)

Greenidge
Haynes
Richards
Kallicharan
Rowe
Lloyd*
Murray+
Roberts
Garner
Holding
Croft

I am not sure if Rowe was a better batsman than Richardson though.

The question is which 4 are better (as remaining 7 players were the same)

1980 WI: Kallicharran, Rowe Murray & Croft

1984 WI: Richardson, Gomes, Dujon & Walsh

I think I prefer the 1980 version, but it's close either way.

He wasnt. But I just had to find a WI team with the four pacemen at their peak and a team with the very gifted and underated Alvin Kallicharan.

Aye. Kalli was massively underrated.
IMO, he was better than any Aussie batsman currently barring maybe Ponting.
He was averaging nearly 50 till the very last season of his career- when he bolloxed up his shoulder and his career just nose-dived.
But a 50 average back in those days after 50 tests is nothing to joke about.

Yes and he was quite gifted against spin as well. Maybe even in the Lara category when it came to playing spin.

Yup.
My father, who's been a cricket-holic for as long as i can remember rates Kallis as one of the best players of spin ever ( along with Lara, Tendy, Azhar,Sidhu, Abbass,Miandad and Martin Crowe)

How about the English 1st Test side vs Australia 1930

JB Hobbs (56.94)
H Sutcliffe (60.73)
WR Hammond (58.45)
FE Woolley
EH Hendren
*APF Chapman
H Larwood
RWV Robins
MW Tate
RK Tyldesley
+G Duckworth

Not the overall greatest team, but is this the best top 3 ever?

Woolley and Hendren were greats as well, don't forget that.

Patsy Hendren is often overlooked for some reason, his record is comparable to most.

Only because he tucked in against the weak emerging sides of his time such as the West Indies, his average against Australia was under 40.

I agree that Hendren was a great (he averages 47) and I thought I'd hit gold when I saw this top 6, however when I looked up Woolley and Percy Chapman's records my argument didn't hold up :(

How about the England team that regained the Ashes after years of geting hammered by Australia - the 1953 team I mean! Hutton, Bill Edrich, May, Compton, Graveney, Bailey, Evans, Laker, Lock, Trueman and Bedser. Has a claim to be England's best post-war XI IMO.

 You got me... I thought you meant that "lucky that Gillespie & Katich were playing & McGrath was missing" team of 2005.

The 1953 team looks excellent :)
