Maxum in race against time to be fit for Open

CDR's Jarkko Maxum will race to be fit for both the singles and doubles draw at the Australian Open after suffering a back scare following his doubles semi final exit in Chennai. Maxum suffered difficulties with his back in he and partner Rob Bowenburg's loss to Jefferson Drake and Martti Korpinen, and is taking every precaution ahead of the Open beginning in Melbourne Park on January 18. He's expected to recover in time, but his preparation will no doubt be affected by this setback.

Vollan withdraws from Sydney, Open

Norway's Kim Vollan has withdrawn from the Medibank International Sydney starting next Monday and is also expected to withdraw from the Australian Open in the coming days. The Norwegian No. 1 has suffered a shoulder strain that will likely keep him out of action until late February.

Matías out of Santiago
The Movistar Open in Santiago has been dealt another blow ahead of next week with news that World No. 24 Tiago Matías will miss through a calf strain. Matías, who made it through to the round of 32 in Melbourne last week, announced on his website that he had withdrawn from the Chilean tournament that starts the South American clay court season. In an already weak draw, Matías was expected to receive the No. 1 seed.

Blanco in race to Davis Cup
After last week making it to the final of the Australian Open, world No. 2 Daniel Páez Blanco has withdrawn from upcoming tournaments citing an injury to his intercostal muscles. The news comes a blow to the organisers of the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam next week where Blanco was set to be seeded No. 1, and leaves the Spanish Davis Cup team waiting news as to whether Blanco will make himself available. "I would think I will be match fit by March," Blanco wrote on his website. "But I'm not sure now whether I play or not. I love representing my country, but I won't do it if it puts my season in danger."

Carter hits further setback

After last week being forced to withdraw due to a calf strain from the main draw in San Jose, Chennai champion Morgan Carter has also been forced to withdraw from the PTA 500 tournament in Memphis with the same injury. The World No. 31 has struggled for fitness as of late, and remains in doubt for the lucrative tournament in Dubai the following week.

Hip injury rules Li out until April

Chinese No. 2 Li Wang will be out of action until April after being struck down by a hip injury. Whilst not requiring surgery, Li has withdrawn from Marseille and Copenhagen, and is expected to announce his withdrawal from Masters Series tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, as well as China's March 5 tie against South Korea.

Kennedy out of Indian Wells, doubtful for Miami

Ankle surgery will keep Canada's Davis Kennedy out of action for at least a month, and has left him in doubt for the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami after he announced on Twitter he would miss Indian Wells. Kennedy, who was upset by Waylon Jones in the second round in Memphis this week, requires minor surgery on his right ankle that will take place tomorrow. "Seen the specialist and need surgery," Kennedy 'tweeted' early this morning. "Not going to Cali but might be back for Miami. 50/50 chance as of now."

Britain rocked by Charles omission

World No. 13 Henry Charles is an almost certainty to miss both Indian Wells and Miami after suffering a groin strain in training for this week's Davis Cup World Group tie against Austria. In a first round clash, Charles was set to be the British No. 1 before being forced out of the next few weeks after going down trying to retrieve a volley. He has been replaced in the four-man squad by alternate Sebastian Moss.

Spain have also been hit by another omission has Ion Andueza followed Daniel Páez Blanco into the injury bin after struggling with a wrist complaint. Expected to play the doubles tie, he's replaced by Dubai quarter finalist Javier Villaneuva.

Altman, Depuis late withdrawals from Indian Wells
World No. 9 Illya Altman has been ruled out of this week's Indian Wells Masters with a hamstring strain suffered in the Ukraine's 3-2 Davis Cup win over Germany. Altman lost the dead rubber to Becker Haas, and in the process suffered a twinge to his hamstring. Depuis, meanwhile, continues to show obvious signs of an aging body with his second absense; this time through a damaged heel.

Shoulder injury sidelines Vollan again
Season I Wimbledon quarter finalist Kim Vollan's injury-riddled start to season II has continued as he was sidelined for another three weeks with a right shoulder injury that has plagued him since the start of the year. Vollan required minor surgery on his shoulder that kept him out of the Australian Open, but returned to action at Indian Wells with a 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to Ukraine's Viktor Vuriak. Scheduled for the stacked Challenger in Sunrise this week, Vollan was forced to withdraw from that and Miami.

Injury gives Drake walkover into quarters
Ukraine's Viktor Vuriak will withdraw from this Tuesday's fourth round clash at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with a hamstring injury. Late in his surprise victory over Hungary's József Boros, Vuriak obviously tweaked his left hamstring but did enough to serve the match out 6-3, 7-5. His scheduled match with East CWLand's Jefferson Drake, however, is off as he was forced to leave the country for treatment in Europe for a suspected tear.

Moreno in race to make Roland Garros

World No. 11 Juan Moreno will suffer a certain rankings hit after he confirmed he is unlikely to be fit for the French Open this May after undergoing surgery on an injured hip. The Argentine, who made the semi finals last season at Roland Garros, has been suffering with a hip complaint lately and did not look his usual self in his 1-6, 1-6 thrashing against Danijel Micic at Indian Wells. If Moreno misses Indian Wells it will be disastrous to his ranking with the majority of his best form having come on the red clay last season. Hypothetically, if Moreno had lost all his points to and including Roland Garros today he would be ranked No. 26.

Kennedy, Charles face setbacks

Canada's Davis Kennedy and Great Britain's Henry Charles will miss further action through injury and have both withdrawn from the Miami Masters starting this Thursday. Charles noted on his website that he expects to be back in training next week following a groin complaint, but Kennedy was the biggest shock as he announced his withdrawal on Sunday as he decided to undergo surgery on an injured ankle. The Canadian was set to return at Miami after missing Indian Wells, but advice received advice suggesting he should elect to have surgery now rather than face bigger issues down the track. He's expected back in early May.

Miami Masters hit by injury plague

Thirteen withdrawals have severely weakened the field for this week's Sony Ericsson Masters in Miami, FL. The biggest blow was to American Wayne Boyd who will require three months on the sidelines following a snapped fibula suffered in a freak accident. His doubles partner Morton Blundell will now team up with Belarus' Denis Isaev and will apply for an on-site entry to Miami.

Li hit by hip setback
China's Li Wang will miss a further two months after aggravating his injured hip in light training last week. Li underwent surgery for a hip problem back in February, and was expected to return by the Rome Masters next week. Preliminary estimates suggest he needs to undergo another round of surgery to clean up some debris, and will be in a race against time to return by Wimbledon.

Joaquín withdraws from Barcelona
Fifteenth seed Sergio Joaquín has withdrawn from Barcelona with a right ankle injury. The Casablanca champion was drawn in Illya Altman's quarter at his home tournament, but withdrew after being placed for a third round clash with Altman. The withdrawal is good news for Spas Delev who faces an easier run as Joaquín is replaced with a lucky loser.

Boros tipped to withdraw from Roland Garros
Many suspected fatigue after József Boros withdrew from his title defence in Munich, but his withdrawal from the Madrid Masters was confirmed to be injury related with the World No. 7 believed to be suffering from a neck injury. The Rome finalist is facing a race against the clock to be fit for the beginning of the Grand Slam on May 23, but tour doctors have reportedly advised him against competing. Boros would join Juan Moreno, Randy Smeltz, Davis Kennedy, Zhijun Sun and Ivan Genov among the likely to seeds to have withdrawn from the French Open.
