Cricket Web XI v Bangladesh
in PDV Dome

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

A shocking batting effort rounded off a grim day for the whole of CWLand in the PDV Dome, as they fell to a 12-run defeat to the bowling might of Rajin Saleh. Rajin, who had earlier rebuilt after a fine new-ball spell from Clapham and Gough set the Bangladeshis back to 23 for three, claimed three wickets with testing off-breaks as Bangladesh took the series to a third decisive game.

The bowling performance was, Clapham and Gough aside, toothless once more. The spinners kept the run rate down but had little success on the placid track, allowing Habibul Bashar a career-best 84 not out while Rajin stuck in for 54 from the other end. Gough's second spell had Rajin bowled, and Pickup returned to bowl a spineless Rahim, yet Mortaza knew how to attack the bowlers against a changed old ball, scoring a vital 20.

Bangladesh still struggled to 213 for five, and with Stedman and Chaulk easing to 84, albeit at a slow rate, the going looked easy. That's what the middle order said, too. Without Cloete or Goff, the ODI veterans, it looked as no one had any idea of how to approach a target. Dauth lasted eight balls before hoiking to Bashar, a wholly injudicious stroke. De Silva committed a similar offence against Rafique, while Chaulk was the only one to succumb to a genuinely good delivery, a quick yorker from Mortaza which was caught. Mortaza recovered from a poor opening spell to end with figures of one for 34.

Still, with Camps and Butler batting and 57 to get from the last ten overs, it looked like a confident position. Butler hit a four off Rafique in the forty-second over to relieve pressure, but Razzak struck to remove both Camps and Halsey in the same over - three wickets in hand with 29 to get. As Rasel returned and held a return catch off Butler's batting, the odds on Bangladesh plummeted, and the remainder of the batting rolled over feebly, with the exception of Pickup, who edged a four off Saleh before getting Gough on strike. Attempting the big smash, he was caught by Nafees at third man.

Bangladesh 213 for five (50 overs)
Habibul Bashar 84*, Rajin Saleh 54; KR Clapham 2-36, KJ Gough 2-43

Cricket Web XI 201 all out (48.4 overs)
AP Chaulk 66; Rajin Saleh 3-36, Syed Rasel 2-31, Mohammad Rafique 2-35, Abdur Razzak 2-38

Bangladesh won by 12 runs

Hopeless batting. Credit to all the Bangladeshi bowlers for chipping away, but really, not pretty by us. Need this third one now.

:( Dissappointing, but chin up fellas, i'm sure we can hit back with a dominant final perforamnce.

On a personal note, i'm very pleased with my opening spell, i'll take 8-0-19-2 most days :)

Quite simply unacceptable. This is a side that we have proven we are far, far stronger than, but we turned out as if we had a divine right to chase down 213. No team has a divine right to do anything: everything is a direct result of how much effort you put into it and we got no more than we deserved.

Bangladesh, today, were better than us. It now falls on the shoulders of everybody - the middle order more than anyone - to bounce back in the third ODI and show the world that this was just a blip. We have taken so many steps forward now that teetering back is simply not an option.

Wow really disappointing result. Credit to Bangladesh who played well, but our batting was woeful. Not good enough really.

Bit disappointed to have been rested as well, though I can understand the decision.

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

A wholly unimpressive One-day International series concluded in Edfield with a narrow eight-run victory for the Cricket Web XI today, as Bangladesh squandered an excellent position. For once, Stedman and Chaulk failed, leaving the other batsmen under severe pressure; scoring rates dropped and Bangladesh were on course for an easy victory. However, a fine bowling and fielding performance along with a lack of nerve from the tourists gave the hosts an eight-run victory.

Syed Rasel and Mashrafe Mortaza showed there were plenty of demons in the pitch despite Pickup's decision to bat, and decimated Chaulk and Stedman before they even reached double figures. With the score at 10 for two, cautious batting was required from Cloete and Butler - this did not, however, prevent an almighty heave from Cloete when on 24, leaving the Webheads precariously placed. Rafique piled on the pressure, choking Dauth, and it was only due to the mature batting of Crampton and Camps that the team passed 150. Regardless, the lack of batting below them meant that scoring was naturally kept back.

Thus, the Webheads were forced to defend 223 on, at least, a slowish wicket. This turned out to be the key to keeping the tourists at bay. Omar and Nafees batted with ease to 126, and the target looked like a formality, when Camps' medium pace was brought in for a second spell. He had started with five wides in his first; now he settled down to basics, put the ball in slightly full and on a length, and was rewarded with the wickets of both openers, who put bat to ball and were duly punished. Bashar showed that the last match was a blip, smashing Pickup to Gough for a five-ball one, while Rajin's form blew away like dust in Oklahoma as a Halsey googly found its way between bat and pad for a simple dismissal.

Oddly enough, Tamim Iqbal formed a resistance, and at the same time the key to the chase. With 48 required from the last eight after Halsey's strike to remove Rajin, Halsey conceded ten in his next, and was taken off to leave Watt, Gough and Pickup with the brutal duty to finish the tourists off. The last overs were nerve-wracking for everyone; however, the bowlers brought their finest stuff, and when Tamim edged Watt to first slip the hosts looked like victors. This held despite Rahim's wild edge past Chaulk and down to third man, as Pickup and Watt provided a number of unhittable deliveries, before Gough finished things off with two wickets.

Plenty of question marks will remain over both the bowling and the batting, and the Webheads have certainly fallen a long way from the dizzy heights of 948 all out, but a series win will stand in the record books.

Cricket Web XI 222 for six (50 overs)
AJ Crampton 66, CR Butler 49, LA Camps 45*; Mohammad Rafique 2-37, Mashrafe Mortaza 2-52
