Not Terrible
Formula 1 isn't far from wrestling in some ways. The best comparison would be the Speed Racer cartoons though, it legitimately describes it perfectly.

Formula 1 is the worst racing series on the planet. They can't even claim to have the best drivers with pure trash like Lance Stroll and other various daddys boys in the field.

If you want high quality, actually watchable open wheel racing, choose Indy Car. The Americans do a lot of things badly, but they know how to design a parity sport and their road courses are usually among the best in the world.

F1 is getting super popular in the US.

Now that I think about it, it’s hard to believe Europeans would do racing better than Americans. Doesn’t fit with any of my national stereotypes.

Exactly. Which is why the detail matters. Otherwise it is just standard bad luck from the safety car but would still be like going from 5-0 up to last goal wins.
I'll improve the analogy by saying the ref gives a penalty correctly to the team 5-0 down and decides before they take it that next goal's the winner.

Absolutely this. F1 has always been somewhat of a marketing/PR caravan with a bit of racing on the side, but that has only increased exponentially in this current day and age, tend to think a lot of the growth (especially Stateside) is more led by Drive to Survive fans as opposed to genuine racing fans. If anything I am a touch surprised this popularity upswing didn't happen earlier, that is mainly to Bernie Ecclestone being a luddite who pretty much thought the internet was a passing fad

IndyCar is uneqivocally a better on track product, but has nothing like the level of prestige in the eyes of sponsors and marketers. The euro high society vibe about F1 is just more attractive to the corporate world (which is pretty dire imo)

Yeah F1 is all show no go, a place to be seen and follow the off track narrative rather than the place to be the best and create an on track narrative.

Verstappen symbolizes a lot wrong with it. Son of, annointed chosen one gets #1 driver gigs ahead of higher quality teammates who slogged far harder to get there (Ricciardo), can do what he likes on track with no repercussions.

Would say it's more the other way round. It's 5-0 but (correctly, by the rules) goes to next goal winner due to chance circumstances. But as soon as it switched to next goal wins the ref awarded a dodgy penalty to settle it.
