Overall series ratings
Cook 5 - didn't score many but the ones he did score were important. Captaincy took a lot of stick but got the job done
Root 5 - struggled most of the time but played one gun innings and a couple of key wickets
Trott 4 - again struggled most of the time, played a few decent knocks where you'd have expected him to go on
Pietersen 6 - see above really, good knock at OT and a few decent starts, great knock tonight
Bell 9 - not much to say that hasn't already been said
Bairstow 3 - started to look composed in his last dig then got out, think he'll get another chance but needs to improve massively
Prior 3 - well below par, signs of improvement in the last Test hopefully point towards a better series in the return leg
Broad 8 - when he was good, he was incredible. Despite what his figures might have said he rarely fell apart bar the odd spell and played some useful knocks
Swann 8 - his best series against the Aussies, couldn't have asked for much more from him
Anderson 8 - ATG performance in one Test, very good in two and disappointing in the other two. The Anderson of 09 wouldn't have come back from his poor displays at OT/Durham though but there's no keeping him down
Finn 2 - woeful but did make the key breakthroughs in the first Aussie innings of the series for which we should all be grateful
Bresnan 8 - excellent with bat and ball, a real return to form, let's hope he's fit or the return leg
Kerrigan 9 - remained unbeaten in his only innings, a sterling effort
Woakes 5 - hard to rate, bowled erratically, looked decent with the bat on day 3 and in the chase tonight but was poor this morning
Rogers 8 - kept the new ball at bay so many times, probably a better series than his stats reflected
Watson 6 - woeful for three tests, decent at Durham, outstanding at The Oval
Cowan 2 - probably a better batsman than Khawaja
Clarke 6.5 - played the innings of the series but was unable to reach the heights he's scaled over the past few years the rest of the time, largely due to being Broad's bitch but also received some of the balls of the series
Smith 6 - great at The Oval, couple of other decent knocks, struggled the rest of the time
Hughes 5 - as bad as he was at Lord's, he kept a massacre at bay at Trent Bridge and probably deserves a bit more recognition for that
Haddin 7 - excellent with the gloves, did little with the bat post-TB
Siddle 7 - ran out of steam towards the end, falling just short overall for me of the standards set by Harris/Anderson/Broad
Starc 5 - a healthy mix of pies and jaffas keeps things interesting
Pattinson 5 - wasn't up to the standards we might have expected but he was evidently carrying an injury at least in the second Test, good with the bat
Agar 6 - the feel good story of the summer at TB but needs to learn to bowl
Khawaja 0 - makes Ravi Bopara look like Ricky Ponting
Harris 9 - deserved to be on the winning side
Warner 4 - cracking knock at Durham but little else of note for all his threat

Joe Root - 5 - Decent first innings fifty
Jonathan Trott - 7.5 - Decent match. Couple of minor scores, the latter really important in the run chase, and a wicket
Kevin Pietersen - 8 - Like Trott, but his second innings effort better
Ian Bell - 6 - Didn't even score a ton
Chris Woakes - 5 - Would've won it if the light held off for half an hour longer
Matt Prior - 6.5 - Decent forty odd and was tidy behind the sticks

David Warner 1 - twin failures.
Shane Watson 9.5 - hard to fault him at all here. Loses half a mark for not getting the double in the first innings.
Michael Clarke 4 - hard to judge. One failure where he looked extremely uncomfortable, one innings where we learned very little.
Steve Smith 9 - not the hardest situation to score runs, but did very well.
Brad Haddin 4 - odd game behind the stumps, meh with the bat but he was on a hiding to nothing to some extent.
James Faulkner 8 - did what needed to be done. Still shouldn't be picked in Australia barring injury though.
Mitchell Starc 5 - almost cost Australia the game in the second innings, was good if inconsistent first dig though.
Peter Siddle 3 - did little, though didn't get hammered at least.
Ryan Harris 7 - well bowled, didn't dominate though.
Nathan Lyon 5 - meh, was OK. Didn't do a lot though.

Stuart Broad 7 - very unlucky to only get 1 wicket, had the likes of Warner and Clarke in all sorts of trouble. Second innings haul was in a weird circumstance but well deserved for his first-innings efforts. Did get hit a lot, though.
Graeme Swann 6.5 - fun batting, bowled reasonable.
James Anderson 7 - seems to be back somewhere resembling his best, though did benefit somewhat from other bowlers pressure.
Simon Kerrigan 0 - deary me. You have to feel for him, and hopefully his cards aren't marked.

Agree with most of those, but would bump Bairstow up to a 5 as his runs at TB are forgotten now but where important.

Alastair Cook 5 - big disappointment for England, Australia bowled well at him and didn't give him any areas where he could murder the bowling. Nevertheless, he did play some decent innings, which were key in a series with many close tests.
Joe Root 5 - one big innings, but little else. Seemed to grind a lot, but more often than not fell cheaply. Even in his big innings he got an early let-off.
Jonathon Trott 4.5 - not much to talk about. Annoyingly for England, he often got good starts and looked set to score big ones, but threw them away. Again, in many ways was a victim of good bowling.
Kevin Pietersen 7 - England's second best batsman after Bell. Played quite a few crucial knocks, and was probably England's most aggressive batsman. Didn't really light that many Christmas trees though.
Ian Bell 9.5 - almost perfect. Whenever England needed runs, he came to the show, every knock this series being crucial. Hard to think of many better series with the bat. Loses half a mark if only because he didn't score a daddy hundred.
Jonathon Bairstow 3.5 - very surprised he averaged 29. Looked at sea all series, and while he's likely to get future chances he needs a lot of work. I suppose he did have the odd key knock though.
Matt Prior 4 - was largely awful with the bat all series, though did look better in the final test. Was OK with the gloves.
Stuart Broad 8 - only really bowled well in one Test (Durham), but my god he was good there. Did seem to bowl well without reward in most Tests, and had a key knack of working out Clarke. Played one absolutely crucial knock with the bat.
Graeme Swann 8 - probably England's most consistent bowler, have to admit I was wrong here. Figures arguably flattered him, as he did get an advantage in bowling against a poor batting lineup, but that shouldn't take anything away from him. Well played.
Jimmy Anderson 7.5 - one lethal Test (Trent Bridge), but other than that was inconsistent. Played well in London, but looked tired in the other two Tests.
Steven Finn 1.5 - horrendous. Did get a couple of breakthroughs, but almost cost England a match they should never have really lost.
Tim Bresnan 7 - plenty of key all-round performances. England's firefighter with the ball, he often was the one that got a key breakthrough for his more heralded team-mates to capitalise on.

Did have well documented problems with Swann, but hopefully he'll learn how to cope in the meantime.
Shane Watson 6.5 - largely poor in the first three tests, with his tenancy to expose his front pad being willfully exploited despite mostly making good starts, however this did improve over time. Bowling has lost a lot of its bite, perhaps due to injuries, but did keep things tight.
Ed Cowan 2 - probably had to go, really. Not the way forward for Australia, due to his age and mediocre record.
Michael Clarke 7 - one excellent innings, but a disappointment compared to what we are used to from him. His back seemed to hinder him, particularly against Broad, though in his defence he did recieve a lot of jaffas, so England deserve a lot of credit for nullifying Australia's main bat.
Steve Smith 8 - very good from the People's Champ. Despite various technical flaws, he made some key knocks, and got a century for his trouble. Nice part-time bowling too.
Phil Hughes 4.5 - I shudder to think what would've happened at Trent Bridge without him, but was awful at Lords. In hindsight was unlucky to be turfed for Khawaja, but his cards seem marked for the near future.
Brad Haddin 5.5 - very good with the gloves, some of the catches he took were screamers and you can clearly tell the difference between him and Wade. Couple of good knocks, but did little after Old Trafford.
Ashton Agar 5 - well batted at Trent Bridge, but still needs a lot of work to be done with the ball. Still very young, but I worry he'll go down the route of the Rashids and Vettoris of this world.
Mitchell Starc 6 - strange series. Probably gave England their most pies, but still took wickets. Harshly treated by many here though, I don't think his inconsistency is half as bad as the other Mitchell. Batting was fun.
Peter Siddle 7.5 - mostly excellent in the first three Tests but did slip quite significantly in the last two Tests. Was he tired? Or did England work him out?
James Pattinson 5 - was pretty meh, though injury didn't help and did sometimes seem an unlucky bowler.
Usman Khawaja 2 - largely terrible. One decent innings, which even then was after the game was long gone, and a lot of failures. Surely his cards have been marked.
Ryan Harris 9.5 - I don't think he bowled badly all series. Was simply mint, and his fitness and management will be crucial in Australia.
David Warner 4 - one key innings, but little else. In his defense he did have to bat in 'hiding to nothing' kind of situations a few times.

Matt Prior 5 - Kept ok, batted meh most of the time couple of half decent innings in adversity.
Stuart Broad 9 -Bowled brilliantly throughout, was so unlucky at times, Key innings.
Graeme Swann 8 - Has bowled better for worse figures, always positive with the bat
Jimmy Anderson 7 - Very good in first and last test, bit rubbish in between
Steven Finn 4 - Was awful but as always took wickets.
Tim Bresnan 8 - Wag, hard not to love him, doesn't look a cricketer but clearly is.
Chris Woakes 2 -Terrible bowling, batted okay
Simon Kerrigan 0 - Not a Test player, prove me wrong kid.

Rogers 3 - not much runs, but did stay out in the middle for a while in the second innings which probably prevented any hopes of England getting back in the match.
Warner 9 - more or less excellent, seemed unfazed by England's bowling. Loses a point for not kicking in the first innings.
Watson 3 - got a start in the first innings and stayed out there for a while in both, though his dismissal did set off the collapse.
Clarke 9 - nothing needs to be said about the first innings but a brilliant century in the second. Captaincy was excellent.
Smith 4.5 - not good on paper, but did manage to fight for 30-odd in the first innings, which probably managed to let us avoid a full-blown collapse.
Bailey 3.5 - failure first up, reasonable knock on paper in the second but it was in easy circumstances, he didn't go on to get a big one and gave a couple of chances. Not convinced.
Haddin 9 - outstanding. Keeping was solid, and his batting was crucial. Heaven knows how this game may have turned out without him.
Johnson 9.5 - more or less flawless performance. His best bowling was frighteningly good, and he played an extremely crucial innings to give Australia something to bowl at. Loses half a mark if only because his first spell was pretty awful.
Siddle 7 - good, and probably didn't get the figures he deserved due to the carnage on the other end. Had Pietersen in particular in all sorts of trouble on the 4th morning.
Harris 8 - very, very strong. Hardly bowled badly and played an important role in knocking off the top-order.
Lyon 8 - great on Day 2, struggled a little bit early on in the second dig but came back hard to wrap up the match.
Cook 6 - fighting knock in the second innings but it was too little too late. Didn't captain well at all.
Carberry 5 - good knock first up, very unlucky mode of dismissal in the second.
Trott 1 - oh dear god. His batting against Johnson in particular was disgusting.
Pietersen 3 - two bad shots ruined two decent starts. In some ways England's most annoying bat.
Bell 3.5 - failure in the first innings, start in the second. Meh.
Root 3.5 - horribly exposed in the eye of the storm in the first innings, but actually managed to show real fight in the second innings, even though it was too little, too late.
Prior 3 - dear god. At least his keeping was decent.
Broad 8.5 - by far England's best player. The only English bowler that really stood up to be counted (although some of his wickets were lucky) and had a fun knock down the order.
Swann 3 - poor. OK it wasn't the easiest position to bowl in and he did get some dodgy field placings, but still didn't seem much of a threat.
Tremlett 5 - oh so you can be an international bowler at 125kmph? Seriously though wasn't that bad, did take a couple of wickets and kept it tight.

Carberry - 5. Reasonable debut. Didn't look out of place.
Cook - 6. Good second innings. Predictable first innings dismissal in that any bowling coach worth his salt knows you need to pitch it up to him.
Trott - 1. Really, really poor game. The second innings is one of the best examples of a mentally shot batsman and why you should always have faith in your own game.
KP - 4. Looked in reasonable touch but played a poor shot second innings
Bell - 4. Ditto. As PEWs mentioned, he's not totally comfortable with his judgement of off stump. It was a good ball though.
Root - 4. I want to mark him higher but that was a very poor shot to Johnson in the first innings, and rather uncharacteristic. Should've tried to farm the strike when Anderson came in but the match was already over I suppose. I like the look of him.
Prior - 2. The poor form continues. He kept ok.
Broad - 7. Bowled very well and batted well in the first innings.
Swann - 3. I wouldn't say he bowled poorly, but Aus batted well against him and he didn't have a plan B. Awful with the bat.
Tremlett - 5. Was down on pace but put it in the right areas often enough to pick up the odd wicket.
Anderson - 5. Bowled beautifully in the first innings.
Australia:
Warner - 9. I thought he batted exceptionally well in both innings and would've been very disappointed with his shot in the first dig. As we've seen before from Warner, he is technically sound and can make batting look easy while all those around him fail. I rate him very, very highly.
Rogers - 3. Got starts but never got going.
Watson - 3. Ditto. Played a poor shot to get out in the first innings. His bowling wasn't utilised this test but I think it will be more useful in Adelaide.
Clarke - 8. Excellent century in the second innings. Is vulnerable against the moving ball but there's noone better at taking the attack to bowlers on a true pitch.
Bailey - 3. I don't see him as a test level batsman, but if the top order set up the game for him he could be dangerous in the way that the likes of Dhoni is dangerous.
Haddin - 9. Superb test for him. First inning knock, good glove work, second innings knock. Top notch.
Johnson - 10. Can't ask for more than a wicket haul and brilliant batting in both innings.
Siddle - 6. I thought he bowled very, very well in both innings and was unlucky not to pick up more wickets. A superb 3rd bowler.
Harris - 7. The real spearhead of the attack, Johson's haul notwithstanding. This was a flat, difficult deck for someone of his style to bowl on and I thought he was excellent and picked up key wickets at crucial times.
Lyon - 7. Gives the ball a nice rip. Would love to see him develop a better arm ball, but otherwise I really like him as a bowler. Would like to see him come over the wicket to the right handers more.
